This fall marked the first season for the Greenville High School volleyball team, and it was a solid learning experience for the players.

Assistant coach Donna Sunnycalb said experience was a key issue all season.

“Being the first season, we’re just inexperienced,” she said. “Our players are still learning how to play the game, and that’s all we can expect.”

Sunnycalb spent much of the season leading the team after head coach Morgan Cooke took a maternity leave.

The Tigers faced off against Monroe County, Carver, Jess Lanier, Wetumpka and Brewton before falling to St. Paul’s in the regional tournament.

One of the challenges facing the team before next season is getting equipment so the team can hold home matches.

“We’re working on getting some good equipment, not just PE stuff, but we still need some money to do that,” Sunnycalb said.

Despite the bumps along the way for the Tigers, Sunnycalb said it was a solid season.

“I think there were moments of glory for everyone on the team,” she said. “We’ve got good athletes, so the future is bright.”
