Panthers prepare for long trip

Last week, Georgiana faced defending state champion Sweet Water, but fortunately for the Panthers, this week’s opponent won’t be so formidable.
The Panthers face another long road trip to Coffeeville to take on the Coffeeville Panthers.
“They have a lot of size, which bothers me, and they have fairly good speed,” said head coach Shane Smothers. “They’ve been trying a few different things this year on offense and defense. We’re going to have to make sure their size doesn’t hurt us by using our quickness.”
One thing the Panthers have been dealing with this season is emotional intensity.
“We’ve got to re-do what we did last Friday as far as emotion is concerned,” he said. “We were ready, and we’ve got to take that to the next game instead of being flat.”
The Panthers are also dealing with the dismissal of two seniors, Adones Peterson and Jerrod Pugh, from the team last week.
Georgiana has also had a couple of players deal with sicknesses like bronchitis and viruses, but adjustments were made and the replacements saw quality playing time against Sweet Water.
“We had a good day in the weight room, which is a positive,” Smothers said. “I’m expecting them to get their mind right and go to Coffeeville and play hard. We’re stressing that you’ve got to play hard each week.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Coffeeville.
