James W. &uot;Jimmy&uot; Salter died Tuesday, May 27, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jimmy was born on June 22, 1936 in Greenville to M.C. and Lola F. Salter who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his two brothers, Francis and William Salter.

His wife of 49 years, Mona, his son Kenneth, sister-in-laws Billie and Ann, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews survive him.

Jimmy graduated from Greenville High School and entered the U.S. Navy, having served aboard the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Essex. He then attended Troy State University where he received his Bachelor of Education and received his Masters Degree in Education Administration from Auburn University. He was a teacher and administrator in the Montgomery County and Okaloosa County, Fla. school systems before going into the retail business. He was owner of Jimmy’s Newsstand in Fort Walton Beach for many years.

He was a life member of the BPOE 1795 in Fort Walton and a past Exalted Ruler. He was named Elk of the Year for 2007-2008. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 238.

In accordance with Jimmy’s wishes, an Elk’s funeral was conducted at graveside at Beal Memorial Cemetery on Friday, May 30, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Danny Adkison will deliver the eulogy. A reception will immediately follow at the Elk’s Lodge.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Covenant Hospice of Niceville in Jimmy’s memory.

A special thanks to Covenant Hospice, the Emerald Coast Cancer Center, and the Emerald Coast Nursing Center for the compassion shown to Jimmy during his illness.
