An atmosphere of poodle skirts, saddle shoes and vintage rock n' roll will reign supreme as the audience goes &#8220Cruisin' into the ‘50s with Junior Miss” this weekend at the Greenville High School Auditorium.

The annual event, sponsored by the Camellia City Junior Woman's Club, will kick off at 7 p.m. this Saturday, September 16.

Eleven high school seniors from Georgiana High, McKenzie High, Greenville High and Fort Dale Academy will all be vying for the title of Butler County's Junior Miss 2007.

&#8220This is the first time in a number of years we have had every single high school in the county represented, so we are very excited about that,” Carol Lee of the CCJWC said.

The contestants will be hard at work practicing every night this week as they prepare for Saturday night's big event, which is &#8220definitely not a beauty contest,” Lee said.

&#8220The girls are evaluated 25 percent on talent; 25 percent on interview; 20 percent on scholastics, and 15 percent each on fitness and self-expression. Each girl will have an interview with the judges Saturday afternoon and they will also be asked an on-stage question that night.”

Preparing for interviews, on-stage dance routines, a tough fitness routine and talent presentations demands much more than simply putting on a pretty dress and parading across a stage.

&#8220Junior Miss is a very demanding program that looks for a truly well-rounded young woman,” Lee said.

&#8220That's why many colleges give scholarship monies to girls who have simply participated in their local programs, even if they don't place. Junior Miss has that kind of reputation.”

In addition to the winner and finalists, category awards will also be presented at Saturday night's event.

Tickets to go &#8220Cruisin' into the ‘50s with Junior Miss” will be $5 at the door.
