The Georgiana Panthers took to the practice field last week looking for what interim head coach Donald Ray Mixon described as &#8220unity” in preparation for their spring game at Troy Stadium May 13. After the resignation of first-year head coach Greg Ennis last week, who led the Panthers to a 4-6 season last year, Mixon said the strength of this next year's version of the Panthers is the offensive line. And the weakness?

&#8220We've got to pass the ball more effectively and gel as a team,” he said. &#8220We've also got a lot of young guys.”

Mixon said the Panthers' goals are pretty simple and that the resignation of Ennis hasn't affected the team.

&#8220I've been here four years and the guys here all know me,” he said. &#8220So things are moving right along. Everybody is working toward the same goal, which is to win ball games.”

Mixon said the team will be led next year by sophomore QB Andre Paige, who'll get protection from an offensive line including Willie Peterson, Shane Boyd and Derrick Godwin.

&#8220The offensive line is very experienced and that's what we're going to run behind,” he said.

Georgiana Principal Keith York said there haven't been any bites yet on the job, but it's still early in the process.

&#8220The job just got posted last week and I haven't gotten any calls, but if all possible we want to have a coach in place before we get out of school,” he said.

Approximately 30 boys suited up for spring drills, a number York said is consistent with years past.

&#8220It's generally what we run for a season,” he said. &#8220There hasn't been many times in my five years at Georgiana that we've carried more than 32 on a team, so it's about an average number for us.”

Georgiana's spring game will consist of the Panthers lining up against Straughn for a half and then Luverne for a half.
