For the past 18 years Lurleen B. Wallace Community College has hosted the Annual LBWCC Student Art Exhibition. Its purpose is to recognize excellence in the visual arts, particularly artworks that were created by art students in the LBW Community College Art Program.

This year's show, displayed in LBWCC's Art Gallery, featured 45 individual pieces submitted in categories such as drawings in black and white, drawings in color, three-dimensional design, painting, printmaking, graphic design and photography.

The top award in the exhibit is "The Best of Show Award," and it was awarded to Mrs. Virginia Anderson Dowling of Opp, Alabama. The winning artwork is an oil painting titled "Gracie." The painting is an image or portrait of a small child wearing a white lace dress and a wreath of pink flowers on her head.

There is also a special portfolio category where LBWCC art students compete for Performance/Art Scholarships. The five students awarded 2005-2006 scholarships are Noel Beverly from Georgianna, Brannon Jackson from Opp, Ashley Moore from Kinston, Erica Knight and Sandy Smith both from McKenzie.

A reception to honor the LBW Community College art students was given on Monday, April 11. Many LBWCC students, parents and friends attended the event.

Many of the art students will continue their training where they will further develop their skills and understanding of art. Some will seek professional careers in art, while others will simply enjoy the benefits of their art experiences and apply their knowledge and understanding to their everyday lives.
