Sometimes being a sports editor is tough. Situations arise like Tuesday afternoon when the entire sports section is finished save one item – the sports editor's column. Normally it would be an easy fill, but some days the writer's mind is as blank as the non-existent piece of paper he is typing on.
But then it all comes together, an idea, a thought, an epiphany of what could potentially be a great column.
But before the writer is able to put fingers to keys, it's gone.
Back to being blank.
Having a clear mind is generally a good thing, but when your profession is based on words, having an empty mind is career threatening.
But just when the writer is about to give up hope and explode in a sea of frustration, a thought emerges.
This weekend one of the teams I cover could clinch their area championship by picking up two victories.
The Greenville Tigers have the chance to win the area and also host the area tournament this weekend when they travel to Carroll(Ozark) and to Eufaula.
Road games are always tough, but when they are back to back and are quality distances away, it can sometimes be nearly impossible to go 2-0.
But the Tigers are a tough, well conditioned team that, after seeing the other three area teams play, are the most complete from top to bottom.
Eufaula, Charles Henderson and Carroll are all equally tough. With the exception of Carroll who is just hanging on for the ride and are waiting on directions, their bags are packed and they are ready to go to the area tournament as a No. 4.
But Greenville has picked up wins over Eufaula and have split with Charles Henderson in Troy.
It's tough to win against Charles Henderson in Troy, trust me.
I've been to several baby-Trojan games and seen them pick up wins when they were clearly not the better team on the floor.
But hey, anything can happen.
If the Tigers lose this weekend to Eufaula and then Eufaula loses to Charles Henderson, that will turn the area standings into a three team log jam for first place with Carroll High relaxing in fourth place safe and secure.
The easiest way for the Tigers to continue playing in the post season is to win out this weekend.
That's all they have to do; two games – two wins.
To quote the Raider's Al Davis; "Just win baby."
It's that simple.
