Qualifying for the Greenville City Elections are right around the corner.

Qualifying for city elections will begin on Tuesday July 6 at 8 a.m. Qualifying will close on July 20 at 5 p.m.

City elections will be held on Aug. 24, with a runoff on Sept. 14 if needed.

The election will be for the purpose of electing a mayor and five city council members.

At Monday night’s Greenville City Council meeting Mayor Dexter McLendon declared a notice of election to make it official.

Mayor McLendon also announced Greenville City Clerk Linda VandenBosche would assume the duties of election manager.

In new business, the council voted to hold a decision on Resolutions 2004-39 and 2004-40.

These Resolutions had dealt with awarding a bid for the Airport Apron Polymer Overlay and approval of application to the Alabama Department of Transportation for state matching funds for the project.

The council decided it would be best to take a look at more bids.

&uot;I talked to Garver engineers,&uot; said McLendon. &uot;They want to take a look at these bids. We only have one bid and they want to see if they can narrow this down.&uot;

The council decided to hold these items for the next meeting.

The council did approve Resolution 2004-41. This Resolution was to authorize the Capital Improvements Fund Expenditure for the Paving Project.

The Paving Project costs totaled $346,327.17 and covered 29 streets that had been in need of repair.

This Resolution simply showed how the project would be funded.

&uot;What we are approving is how we are going to pay for our paving project,&uot; said McLendon. &uot;We’ve broken it down. There are certain things we can do with our four-cent gas tax and the Alabama Trust Fund Account.&uot;

Payment for the project will be broken down as follows:

Alabama Trust Fund Account-$75,300

Capital Improvement Trust Fund-$175,000

Four-Cent Gasoline Tax Account-$36,027.17

Five-Cent Gasoline Tax Account-$60,000

The following Weed and Debris Violations were voted to be taken to the next step.

Beeley and India Bedgood-Lot

Jimmy Hurd-Lot at 914 Wimberly Street

Ida Mae Malloy and Arbie Hayes-Lot next to 814 Oak Street.

Joseph Jordan McCree-Lot at 910 Wimberly Street.

Paul Thompson-Lot at 202 Dunklin Street.

The council also announced a few adjustments due to the Fourth of July holiday.

The council announced July 5 would be a city holiday.

All garbage that would have been picked up on Monday will now be picked up on Tuesday July 6.

Through the holiday the city will host several events.

The Dixie Minor sub-District tournament will be held at Day Park while the Dixie Ponytail Sub-District Tournament will be held at the Softball Complex. Both tournaments will take place June 24-30.

The Dixie Boys District Tournament will also be held at Day Park July 2-8.

The council also asked everyone to remember the &uot;Celebrate America&uot; citywide Fourth of July Celebration and parade sponsored by the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce and Greenville Main Street.

The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. culminating at Tiger Stadium with a fireworks extravaganza slated for 9 p.m.

The council will next meet on July 12 at 5:30 p.m.
