The Greenville Firefighters Association spiced up the night on Saturday, August 16, at the Butler County Fairgrounds with their &uot;Taste of the Bayou&uot; fundraiser.
The night’s festivities included a wonderful meal by acclaimed chef Kevin Ordoyne. It consisted of jambalaya, boiled shrimp and other Cajun delights.
Music for dancing was provided by a deejay and brave karaoke singers performed numbers such as &uot;Take This Job and Shove It.&uot;
Greenville Fire Chief Mike Phillips said everyone seemed to have a great time.
&uot;We were pleased with the turnout,&uot; he said. &uot;The food was great, and everyone looked like they were having a good time.&uot;
Phillips said the fire department sold about 250 tickets for the event, which was down from the 300 tickets they sold last year.
&uot;All the proceeds go to the Greenville Firefighters Association,&uot; he said. &uot;We’re trying to raise enough money to buy a fire prevention education trailer, such as the one used by the Luverne Fire Department. That’s an on-going project for the association, and we will use the money raised at the &uot;Taste of the Bayou&uot; event to go towards that.&uot;
Phillips said he wanted to thank the Greenville Kiwanis Club for the use of the fairground facility, and Dr. Pepper of Luverne and Horn Beverage for their support.
The firefighters also used the event to raise money for their Muscular Dystrophy Association &uot;Fill the Boot&uot; campaign.
Firefighter Mickey Norman said the department has raised more than $2,500 for the organization so far.
&uot;We want to thank everyone that allowed us to place boots in their businesses and helped us with this campaign,&uot; Norman said.
Businesses that hosted boots at their locations are Wendy’s, Arby’s, Russell Stover, Shell Depot, YMCA, Greenville Chevron-Ft. Dale Rd., Old Mexico, Marilyn’s, Whitney Bank – Greenville Bypass, Bates Texaco, Pizza Hut, Shear Cuts, Hampton Inn, Piggly Wiggly, Fred’s, AllTel, The Smokehouse, Freidman’s Jewelry, Subway and Winn Dixie.
