FDA’s fourth graders honor vets

The fourth graders of Fort Dale Academy presented a Patriotic Salute to the members of the military now serving in Iraq and those veterans who served in past wars at the school’s Parent Teacher Association meeting, Monday, April 14, at 6 p.m..

The salute, which was directed by FDA music director Laurie Norden, included the class singing selections such as &uot;Yankee Doodle Dandy&uot; and &uot;This Land is Your Land,&uot;

while dressed in red, white and blue outfits,

The class also presented a check

for $1,150 to Lions Club member Gene Hardin for the club’s Veterans Memorial Fund.

The class chooses an organization every year to benefit with its annual fundraiser.

Class members collected donations individually for the fund.

Outstanding jobs in collecting donations were noted by fourth grade teachers, Regina Parker and Laura Castleberry.

The top collector was Michael Cumbie with $239.83. First runnerup was Ann Carroll Branum with $150.21; second runnerup, Manny Norrell with $103.84; third runnerup, Abigail Carroll with $53.46; and fourth runnerup, Miller Owens with $42.08.

Michael Cumbie also received a special presentation from his grandmother, Bobbie Jean Cumbie, of a certificate awarded to his grandfather Kenneth Cumbie while he served in the Armed Forces.
