If you like a Gershwin tune, then you won’t want to miss the Greenville Area Arts Council’s (GAAC) next production, the Tony-award winning musical &uot;Crazy for You&uot; slated for next Tuesday evening, February 18 at the Ritz Theatre.
The show has been described as &uot;the Quintessential American Musical&uot;, one that ably illustrates the true transforming power of the theatre. The Broadway production took home no less than nine Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Choreography.
&uot;Crazy for You&uot;, based on the 1930s Gershwin musical &uot;Girl Crazy&uot;, features a plethora of pleasing hits from George and Ira Gershwin. The talented siblings wrote some of the loveliest standards in 20th century popular music, including &uot;Embraceable You", &uot;I Got Rhythm&uot; and &uot;S’Wonderful&uot;, many of which are featured in the show.
A new book by author Ken Ludwig (&uot;Lend me a Tenor&uot;) provides an involving 1930s story line that complements both the Gershwins’ songs and Susan Stroman’s period dance routines.
The story revolves around a big-city playboy banker, Bobby Child, who dreams of success on Broadway. Despite the best efforts of his family and fiance, he soon finds himself determined to save a small town’s only theatre as he falls head over heels for a pretty local girl, Polly. Naturally, complications—and comedy—will follow.
&uot; It’s a delightful show and we hope everyone will turn out for this wonderful production,&uot; says Roberta Gamble of the GAAC.
&uot;Crazy for You&uot; is slated to begin at 7 p.m. next Tuesday evening at the Ritz.
Tickets are available at the Pineapple downtown; student tickets are $15 each and adult tickets are $20.
