Tornados take hard loss to Marengo, 41-16

The Tornados traveled to Marengo Friday night after coming off a win last week, and fell 41-16 to the Longhorns.

Marengo, ranked second in the Class-AA bracket, scored first with 2:15 gone in the first quarter. Eric Wilkerson ran 34 yards for the touchdown and Patrick Cannon added the extra point. Wilkerson added another touchdown with 2:59 left in the first quarter on a 13 yard run. Cannon's kick was good and the quarter ended with the Tornados down by 14.

The second quarter saw Longhorn QB Paul Maskerella finish a scoring drive with a one-yard run for six points. Cannon missed the extra point. Two minutes later, Greenville fumbles the ball and Marengo's Matt Barr scoops it up and takes it 30 yards for the touchdown. Cannon's PAT was good and with 7:52 left in the quarter, Greenville was down by 28 points. Marengo scored again as Eric Wilkerson ran 80 yards for a touchdown with 5:11 left in the half. Maskeralla completed a pass to Trey Ramsey for a two-point conversion. Marengo's last score of the night came with 1:46 left in the half. Lane Miller capped a drive with a one-yard run to give the Longhorns 41 points to Greenville's 0.

Greenville grabbed their first score after only 2:13 of the third quarter. Randy Faulk ran in from seven yards out for the score. Andy Beck ran in for the two-point conversion giving the Tornados eight points.

The second score came with 4:10 left in the third quarter as QB Adam Moore ran 51 yards to the endzone. Andy Beck again scored a two-point conversion. The game ended with the Tornados down, 41-16.

QB Adam Moore gained the most yardage for the Tornados, with 94 yards on the ground in eight carries and 27 yards in the air. Moore completed five of 14 passes with two interceptions. Randy Faulk added 68 yards in 15 carries to the 188 yards rushing for GA. Andy Beck carried the ball 10 times for 21 yards and Blakely Ward added five yards on one carry.

Justin Beason caught two of Moore's passes for six yards followed by Thomas Strickland, Michael Coffin and Blakely Ward who each had one reception. The Tornados racked up 225 yards in total offense against the Marengo defense. The GA defense held the Longhorns to 321 yards rushing and only three yards passing.

Ryan Conway and Jim Kilpatrick lead the defense with six tackles each. Blakely Ward and Travis Watson made five tackles and Adam Moore and Justin Beeson each had four tackles.

Next week, Greenville Academy will take on Lowndes Academy on the road.
