Jerome Harris, director of the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department, is well-pleased with his department's efforts in sponsoring the 2001 Dixie Minor league Sub-district Championship, which began on Friday night.

"We have been packed in with fans during the games," Harris said. "People were actually parking on the other side of Commerce Street and walking in to the park."

Harris said every visitor he spoke to was complimenting the community and its cooperative efforts to make the tournament such a success.

"The coaches and players were complimenting the condition of the playing fields, and the fans were praising the service of the concessions and all our employees for their polite and courteous manners," Harris said. "They were also speaking well of the fans - people were saying that in most other places, parents of the competition would rarely speak to them - that says a lot about the community and its residents."

Two nights into the tournament, two teams have been eliminated through the double-elimination process - Elba in the 13-year-old competition and Georgiana in the 14-year-old classification.

"We don't anticipate any problems standing in the way of the rest of the tournament being just as successful," Harris said.
