Commission, Sheriff on the right track a good move

The request for more money for Sheriff deputies is now squarely in the lap of the Butler County Commission.

We think Sheriff Diane Harris did a good job making a case for the raise.

We also think the Commission did a good job of handling her request.

We aren't so proud of the lasting impression left by the WSFA footage about the issue that aired earlier this week.

The sheriff and commissioners are on the right track to looking at some options to erasing the image of law enforcement officers being underpaid in Butler County. The 10-percent increase given to City of Greenville police officers helped that, too.

We urge the Sheriff and Commission to work this problem out diplomatically, as opposed to the deputies negotiating through the media.

We think what might have been intended as a way to apply some pressure on commissioners from the bully pulpit ended up being a black eye for the county.

It's been proven time and time again that two groups working together can get a lot more accomplished that when they work against each other.
