Tornadoes fall to Sparta 35-13

The Tornadoes of Greenville Academy went to Evergreen Friday in search of a victory, and instead were defeated by Sparta, 35-13.

G.A. didn't go down without a fight though, because they played

four hard quarters.

G.A. broke the scoring silence first when Emory Winters scored a touchdown and extra point with 8:40 left on the clock in the first quarter.

Sparta countered making the score 7-6 G.A.

In the second quarter, McKenzie made an 85 yard run for Sparta, followed by a pass to Rusty Salter for the one-point conversion, making the score 14-7 Sparta.

Again in the second, with 5:26 remaining, Salter scored another touchdown, but they were unsuccessful with the point-after attempt.

With 3:26 left to the half, Sparta's Derek Faulkner intercepted a Winters pass and returned for a touchdown, and the point after, making the score going into the half-time break 28-7 Sparta.

With 4:37 left in the third, McKenzie ran 60 yards for a touchdown, followed by John Andrews scored the extra point to make the score 35-7 Sparta.

In the fourth quarter Winters made a one yard return for a touchdown, but the Tornadoes were not successful with the point after. This made the score 35-13 Sparta, and there was no more scoring.

Offensively, Blakely Ward led the rushing with 51 yards on 20 carries. Then it was Bill Conway gaining 20 yards in 11 carries, Micah Moore with 23 yards on seven carries.

Emory Winters passed eight for seventeen attempts, gain 155 yards., and also made two interceptions.

James McGough, Josh Burt, Dustin Bowen, Michael Cauthen, and Brooks Moore all had interceptions.

G.A. gained a total of 325 yards rushing and 6 yards passing.

Defensively, Colt Brantley made 10 tackles and one fumble recovery, Ward made five tackles and one sack, Bowen had four tackles, Bryan Little made seven tackles, Ryan Conway made three tackles and one fumble recovery, and James McGough made three tackles and four recoveries.
