Sparta Academy defeated Fort Dale Academy 43-39 Saturday to claim the championship at the Fort Dale Christmas Tournament.

But the number that stuck out to FDA head coach Reggie Mantooth was 24.

That’s how many turnovers the Lady Eagles committed in the loss. All but one player who saw action in the contest committed at least two turnovers.

“Sparta gave us problems with their press,” Mantooth said. “Basically if you are able to handle their pressure you are going to get a good shot in the paint. We had a great opportunity and I was proud of how we fought back in the game, but we need to learn how to win those types of games.”

Post players Madison Ann Gatson and Ashton Scott at times made Sparta pay for brining full-court pressure. Scott led the Lady Eagles with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Gaston added 10 points.

Mary Sanford Perdue scored eight points for Fort Dale.

The Lady Eagles advanced to the title game by defeating Springwood School 36-26 Friday night.

Perdue led the Lady Eagles with 11 points. Hannah Johnson added eight points and eight rebounds, while Nedra Toulmin Crosby chipped in seven points and 10 rebounds.

Mantooth said it was Fort Dale’s defense that helped it overcome a 17-for-59 night from the field.

“We played pretty good defense, but we didn’t shoot the ball very well,” he said. “It was a good win for our girls and hopefully we can continue to improve.”
