Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” has been played on stages around the world for more than half a century.

Come August, Greenville’s Ritz Theatre will join the long list of venues that have housed the classic murder mystery, which opened in London in 1952.

Director John Cardy, who moved to the Camellia City three years ago, said choosing to perform Christie’s classic was a no-brainer.

“When we finished last summer’s performance of ‘Steel Magnolias’ I had people asking me what we were going to do this summer,” he said. “Some said they’d like to see us do a comedy. Others said they’d like to see a murder mystery. So I figured we’d do a murder-mystery comedy.”

Cardy, who studied theater at the University of South Alabama, will hold auditions for the play Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Ritz Theatre, and is looking to cast five men and three women.

“We’d love for anyone who is interested to come out and audition,” he said. “We’re going to have a blast, and hopefully when it’s all said and done we will have put on another great show.”

Cardy said there is also a need for backstage and front of the house help.

“If someone wants to be a part of the play, but doesn’t want to be on stage we can find something for them to do,” he said.

The show will debut in Greenville on Aug. 10. A second showing will be held on Aug. 11.
