For residents of Vickery Road and Butler Estates, the long wait is finally over.

The Butler County Commission announced Monday plans to pave Vickery Road and resurface Butler Estates. The projects will be funded with a Community Development Block Grant worth $335,381.

“This has been a longtime coming,” said Commissioner Jerry Hartin, who represents District 1, which includes the residents of Vickery Road. “I appreciate the patience of all the people living on Vickery Road. This has been a while coming for them.”

According to Hartin, the Commission had applied for funds to pave the road twice before and had been turned down.

“We’ve been working on this for quite some time,” he said. “I appreciate all the hard work of the other commissioners and (former Prattville mayor) Jim Byard, Jr. Everyone worked hard to make sure this happened and Jim gave me a lot of feedback and was really instrumental in us receiving this grant.”

District 4 Commissioner Jimmy Crum, who represents the residents of Butler Estates, also thanked the other commissioners for helping secure the funds to resurface the road.

“It sure needs it,” Crum said. “I told the people on Butler Estates two years ago that we were going to do this project and it just came through this year. They’ve been waiting a while. I know there are other roads in other districts that need work too and I sure appreciate the other commissioners working so hard to take care of this one. These folks have been waiting a while for this to get done.”

There is no start date for the project, but Hartin said it would begin as soon as the necessary right of ways are acquired and the utilities can be moved from the construction area.

“We’re going to get right to work on that, and get things started as soon as we can,” Hartin said.
