Column: Predictions for Week Two

Published 9:53 am Thursday, September 6, 2012

It’s the second (or third) week of the season, so all of our local teams have gotten their first taste of real action.

It’s still too early to make any long-range predictions for the season, but the general trend should get a little clearer in the coming weeks.

But let’s talk about this week.

Luverne vs Goshen
Luverne took a tough loss last week against Brantley, and they face another area team this week with Goshen.

Goshen is 3-19 all-time against Luverne, and the last time the two teams met in 2007, Luverne came away with a 33-2 win.

I don’t anticipate that much of a blowout, but I think Luverne will bounce back to pick up a win.

CCA at Coosa Valley
The Cougars and the Rebels have a common opponent: Autauga Academy, and the scores were close at both contests.

Coosa lost to AA 34-17, while CCA fell 32-15. Fortunately, there’s more to the game than just comparing scores.

By all accounts, the Cougars were in the game against Autauga until mistakes killed them, and I bet the coaches have worked hard this week to eliminate those.

CCA is a talented team — we’ve seen flashes of it so far this season — and I’m looking for them to come back and put one in the win column.

Highland Home vs Central-Hayneville
Here’s an interesting tidbit for you: the Highland Home Flying Squadron are the only team in Class 2A, Region 3 to start the year with a win.

The others (Calhoun, Central, Elba, Goshen, Luverne, New Brockton and Zion Chapel) all lost last Friday night.

That doesn’t mean much, but I thought it was unusual.

I fully expect Highland Home to move to 2-0 this Friday night against Central.

The Lions put up some points against Florala, but Highland didn’t have much trouble with McKenzie.

Central is currently on a 42-game losing streak. Look for it to go to 43.

Brantley at Kinston
After making an opening statement against Luverne, Brantley travels to Kinston for a Bulldogs-Bulldogs matchup.

Kinston is traditionally not a very strong team, and I don’t think Brantley will have a letdown after last week’s big one.

This one may be over in the first half.
