The Greenville Advocate headlines from this week in 1990, provide a glimpse into the events and achievements that shaped the community during that time. The stories include highlights such as a kindergarten graduation program, a surprise visit from Sam Walton and local efforts to celebrate Earth Day.

 

* Kindergarten Graduation: The K-4 and K-5 kindergarten classes of Greenville Academy presented their graduation program, “A Day At School,” on May 18 at 7:30 p.m.

* Visit from Sam Walton: Employees and customers of Greenville’s new Wal-Mart received a surprise when Sam Walton, co-founder of Walmart and reportedly the wealthiest man in America, visited the store. Local Manager Jim Marshall gave Walton a grand tour, accompanied by Wal-Mart officials including Tom Saey, head of Walmart construction, Jana Jaye, Walmart spokesman, and Tom Cochlan of Sam’s Wholesale.

* Earth Day Celebration: As part of Earth Day, Greenville’s Boy Scout Troop 45 planted a Kwanzan Cherry Tree in Sherling Lake Park. The troop spent Saturday with County Forester Paul Hudgins, learning about forestry and the environment. Participants included Michael Huggins, Steven Walker, Frank Burkett, Dustin Harrell, Raymond Patterson, Mr. Hudgins, Steven Hill, Bobo Hill, David Patterson, Bill Hardin, and Bryce Tribe.

* Clerk of the Year: Mrs. Linda L. Vanden Bosch, City Clerk of Greenville, was named Municipal Clerk of the Year for 1990 by the Alabama Association of Municipal Clerks and Administrators. Mayor Ernie Smith presented the plaque to Mrs. Vanden Bosch. In addition to her role as City Clerk, she served as Treasurer, Personnel Officer, and Revenue Officer for the city. Mrs. Vanden Bosch also contributed to community activities as a member of the South Central Alabama Mental Health Board and as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. While serving the city, she was also active in municipal affairs at the national and international levels as a member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC), having served on its Federal Legislation Committee and Membership Committee.
