Joyce Underwood McCraw, daughter of Clarence James and Rose Joyce Underwood, was born on Aug. 8, 1934, in Trenton, New Jersey, and died on May 9, in Greenville. She and Edward Fishburne McCraw of Anniston were married in 1960. And in 1970, the McCraw’s moved to Greenville when Ed joined the medical group at Stabler Clinic and Hospital. 

Joyce was a proud alumna of the University of Delaware, and would go on to be a lifelong educator, whether in the classroom, for her family or in her community. She taught mathematics for many years at Fort Dale Academy where her daughters attended school and was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Joyce was also a pilot. She and Ed would enjoy logging flight hours together, flying to places they loved like New Jersey to visit Joyce’s family, New Orleans and Miami. They even accomplished a cross-country flight together.

An avid sports fan, Joyce was always up for a conversation about the game, match or tournament of the week. A lover of professional golf, Alabama football and basketball, among others, Joyce wore her colors and supported her teams well.

You might also know Joyce for her famous cookies and candies; her grandchildren have such fond memories of learning those recipes alongside their Gigi in her kitchen.

Joyce is survived by her children Marianne Russell (Mack) and Rose McCraw LeCoq; her grandchildren Mac Russell (Jenelle), Rosemary Kirby (Brock), Patrick Russell, Mary Margaret LeCoq and Michael LeCoq; and great grandchildren Austin and Alice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on May 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Greenville with Father Bill Nguyen officiating. Visitation will precede the service at 10 a.m. in the parish hall. Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be directed to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Greenville.
