Kimberly Anne Horton Matthews, 61 and a beloved resident of Greenville, passed away on May 3, succumbing to natural causes. Born and raised in Homewood, attending Shades Valley High School and Marion Military Institute, Kimberly made her mark in Greenville, where she called home, then lived several years in Florida, attending University of South Florida.
Kimberly’s impact extended far beyond her own life, as she devoted herself to the welfare of animals, beginning as a volunteer in 2012 and ultimately the vice president of the Butler County Humane Society. Her passion for animals was evident in her founding of the Junior Humane Society board for which she was President, inspiring young minds to advocate for the well-being of our furry friends.
Beyond her dedication to animal welfare, Kimberly cherished her family. She is survived by her loving husband Thomas Matthews, her parents, Ann and Michael Moore, her brother Trey Horton and sister-in-law Gina Horton, her daughter Anne Katherine Waslin, and her nephew, Colin Grant Horton, many cousins.
Known for her vibrant spirit and warm personality, Kimberly had a genuine affinity for life, animals, and people alike. Her presence brought joy and comfort to those around her, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In honor of Kimberly’s memory, may we continue to uphold her legacy of compassion, kindness, and love for both animals and humanity. She would ask in lieu of flowers, donations to Butler County Humane Society will be welcomed. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those whose lives she touched. The family will receive family for visitation on Saturday, May 18 beginning at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with a service following at 3 p.m.
