The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has announced plans to replace the Interstate Highway 65 South rest area near Greenville with a larger and updated facility. According to a press release from ALDOT, a contractor installed signs on Monday, April 29, to alert travelers of the closure, which will begin on May 1.

The current rest area will be demolished, and construction of the new facility is tentatively scheduled to begin in early May. The new rest area will be built in the same location and will feature additional stalls, urinals and family restrooms.

During the construction period, the rest area and parking lot will be closed to the public. Travelers are advised to use the next rest area, located in Evergreen, which is 44 miles away from the Greenville rest area. The northbound rest area will remain open during the upgrade of the southbound facility.

The agency is finalizing plans and securing funds to replace the northbound rest area after the completion of the southbound facility. The approximately $14 million project was awarded to W.S. Newell & Sons, Inc., out of Montgomery, who submitted the lowest bid meeting project requirements. The project is expected to last up to two years.
