The Greenville City Council convened in the Council Chamber of City Hall on Mar. 11, at 5:30 p.m., for its regular meeting to discuss business concerning the former Edge Theater and the area’s hospital. 

One of the key discussions revolved around Resolution 2024-02, which was approved on Jan. 22. SBS Investments LLC requested to lease or purchase the former Edge Theater in Ordinance form. Mayor McLendon explained that by changing the resolution (2024-02) to an ordinance (2024-01), the firm would be guaranteed payment in the event a new Mayor or Council members were elected.

“It’s nothing different at all. We just got all the lawyers to agree,” Mclendon said. “They wanted an ordinance instead of a resolution. They wanted it guaranteed and now it’s done.”

The council unanimously voted to place Ordinance 2024-02 into final passage.

Another important discussion took place around Resolution 2024-08 which authorizes a 90-day loan in the amount of $1.6 million to the Greenville Public Improvement Cooperative District (Regional Medical Center of Central Alabama). The resolution was also unanimously adopted. Mayor McLendon emphasized the necessity of the loan to support daily hospital operations.

“This is a short-term loan [of] 1.6 million for 90 days. Our plans are to eventually do a long-term loan,” Mclendon said. “Everybody’s having a hard time right now and the council understands… we have to have a hospital.”

During the meeting, the council approved the minutes for the regular meeting held on Feb. 26 with a unanimous vote. Additionally, the council suspended the rules to permit the passage and adoption of Ordinance 2024-01, with all council members voting in favor.

In other business, the council approved several expenditures, including $8,696.76 for repairs and restoration at Pioneer Cemetery, and $5,800.00 for an HP T2600 plotter/scanner from CPC Office Technologies.

Councilmember Jae’Ques Brown, who was not present for the meeting, was appointed as the delegate to represent the City at the 2024 Alabama League of Municipalities Convention.
