The Alabama Cooperative Extension – Butler County Office, in partnership with Greenville resident James Little, has announced details for the inaugural TRASHIN’ the County, Butler County’s premier Earth Day Recycle event. Scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 20, from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. at the Greenville Elementary School parking lot, the event aims to celebrate all things green and sustainable with a one-day Earth Day celebration.

The event will feature a drive-thru recycling drop-off for electronics, some home appliances and a drug take-back, along with a canned food drive for local food banks. County residents are encouraged to “clean up and clear out” for Earth Day 2024. 

Co-organizer and Butler County Extension Coordinator Sharlean Briggs said she hopes the event will become a local tradition.

“We hope this will become a staple for residents, business owners, and organizations across the county,” Briggs said. 

Sustainability, Community Engagement

Little, co-organizer for the initiative, emphasized that sustainability efforts not only help the environment but also activate community engagement and create a higher quality of life. 

“Being green or sustainable is more than just recycling; it’s about our social and environmental impact within our community,” Little said.

Little envisions Greenville becoming the center for sustainability activity within Butler County and beyond throughout the Black Belt.

How It Works

Residents are asked to box collectible items together and clearly label them before arriving at the event. Items should be placed in the trunk of vehicles or trailers. Participants should pull their vehicles through the designated Recycle Drop-Off lane by entering from Fort Dale Road.

Accepted Items and Partners

Accepted items for recycling include printers, small window air conditioning units, cell phones, and chargers as well as similar items. E-cycle partners like Sabel Steel Service from Montgomery, will be on-site to collect these items. The event will not accept glass bulbs, CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors or televisions.
