Journey back in time to March 1973 through the lens of The Greenville Advocate newspaper. Featured in the March 22 issue, were features and events highlighting the local Boy Scout troop, information announcing additions and renovations for Pioneer Electric Cooperative’s facility, an announcement of the rescue squad’s fundraiser, Royal Restaurant ads, a wedding announcement and pictures which captured the crowning of Miss Debutant.

– Boy Scout Troop 145 spent three hours on a Wednesday afternoon picking up litter on the bypass as part of their summer program. The troop asked for help from all Greenville citizens on the project. Those who assisted included Greg Burnett, David Lewis, John Burt, Terry Pouncey, Bill Fritz, Eddie Stuckey, Johnny Pitts, Greg Schofield, Rickey Edwards and Kelly Bodiford.

– Proposed additions and renovations at Pioneer Electric Cooperative included additional office space and a new warehouse located behind the building. The Co-op property was expected to extend from Bolling Street to Caldwell Street, with officials estimating the facilities to cost in excess of half-a-million dollars.

– The Butler County Rescue Squad was in the midst of a fund drive to raise $18,000 for the construction of a new steel and concrete building for their equipment. The new building was planned to be on the site of the existing squad building on Church Street.

– The Royal Restaurant, owned by F. E. Dyer, served meals at all hours and was tailored for both ladies and gentlemen. The restaurant boasted lady waiters, French cooks and the promise of serving the best cuisine the market afforded. It was located at 125 Commerce Street, opposite Montgomery Mills, one and a half blocks from Union Depot.

-Miss Annabeth Neuendorf and Billy Dale Goodwin were united in marriage in a candlelight ceremony at the First Baptist Church on Saturday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Charles Graham, who performed the double ring ceremony, was assisted by the Rev. Marvin Warwick, pastor of the First Methodist Church.

– Belinda Smith of Georgiana High School was crowned “Miss Debutante 1973” at the second annual Debutante Ball hosted by the Co-Workers Professional Women’s Club. The crown was presented by Nancy Rowe, the 1972 “Miss Debutante.”
