Obituary – Gerald Allen Sexton

Gerald Allen Sexton, 67, of Fort Deposit passed away after a lengthy illness at Jackson Hospital on March 14.

Gerald was born on Jan. 11, 1957, in Greenville to Robert L. and Ruby D. Sexton. After his father’s death in 1957, Gerald’s mother later remarried Rufus “Pete” Bowen who became the father he never had.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law Billy R. Vickery. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Susan Vickery Sexton, mother-in-law Joy Vickery, stepdaughter Renee Lee, stepson Bryan Lee (Laura) and grandsons Owen Daniel Lee, Anders Bryan Lee and William Sullivan Lee, sister-in-law, Ann Russell (Allen), brother-in-law, Lee Vickery (Kim).

Gerald graduated in 1975 from Fort Deposit Academy where he helped win the 1A State Football Championship that year. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving most of his time in Quantico, Virginia at the National Security Agency. After completing four years as a Marine, he went on to graduate from Troy University. Gerald spent his career as a warehouse supervisor for several organizations, the last being with the Alabama Department of Corrections. Gerald was always known for his reliability and strong work ethic.

Gerald had a big heart for animals and often cared for stray dogs. He served as a volunteer with the Fort Deposit Fire Department and was a dedicated member of Bethel Baptist Church. He loved sports, playing softball and football, and watching Alabama football and women’s softball. Mostly he loved his grandsons who brought him love, joy and laughter. 

Services will be Monday, March 18 at Bethel Baptist Church in Fort Deposit with pastor Michael Myrick officiating. The family will receive guests between 1-2 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. A graveside service will immediately follow at Myrtlewood Cemetery in Fort Deposit.
