District 2 Commissioner Joe Peavy has announced the annual “Don’t Drop It On Alabama” Spring Cleanup, scheduled to start in April. Peavy emphasized the importance of community involvement noting that recent participation has dropped.

“This is a great opportunity for neighbors and friends to have a chance to make your community look better,” said Peavy.

The cleanup, available to all Alabama cities, counties, and communities through a partnership with the Association of County Commissions of Alabama (ACCA) and Alabama People Against a Littered State (PALS), provides supportive materials at no cost to participants. These materials include large trash bags, car-type litter bags, brochures, and signage for a successful cleanup week. 

“We provide everything you need… garbage bags and safety signs and all that,” Peavy said. “Then, when it’s all bagged up, we call the Sheriff and he’ll have somebody come by and collect it.”

Peavy highlighted the focus of this year’s cleanup.

“We’re focusing on county roads here,” he said.

He explained that while the city has employees to clean its streets, the county lacks this resource but is willing to assist if needed. Peavy noted that it takes about three hours to cover a mile and that they have covered many miles over the years.

Individuals or groups interested in participating or volunteering for the cleanup can contact the county commission office at 334-382-3612 to arrange for materials and disposal of collected garbage. 

Peavy emphasized the importance of starting arrangements early. “We need to start making arrangements now,” he said. 

According to PALS literature, the “Don’t Drop It On Alabama” Spring Cleanup has been instrumental in saving Alabama taxpayers millions of dollars through the efforts of dedicated volunteers. It serves as a reminder of the impact of litter on the environment and the community, encouraging everyone to contribute to a cleaner, more beautiful Alabama.
