The Greenville Police made an arrest Saturday night for the shooting which left one person dead and another hospitalized.
Police Chief Justin Lovvorn said 18-year-old Edward “Trai” Payne III has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of murder after shooting two individuals earlier Saturday. Payne was arrested and placed in the Butler County Jail.
“All evidence and witness statements indicate that there was only one shooter today who targeted three other individuals,” Lovvorn said. “I would like to thank the Greenville Police Department’s Investigation Division and Patrol Division for working nonstop on today’s incident to gather evidence and facts in order to identify and arrest this suspect.”
Just before 3:30 p.m., Saturday the Greenville Police Department received a call reporting shots fired. Lovvorn confirmed officers responded to the area of North Conecuh Street, arriving on the scene at the intersection of Flowers and North Conecuh where they discovered one gunshot victim.
“Paramedics also arrived and pronounced the gunshot victim deceased at the scene,” Lovvorn said.
Officers located a second gunshot victim on Flowers Street, not far from where the first victim was found.
“A second gunshot victim from the same incident was located on Flowers Street not far from the first victim,” Lovvorn said. He was transported to a Montgomery hospital in stable condition.”
Police have not released the names of the victims pending notification of their families.
“Our prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy and we will continue to work to make sure those responsible are held accountable,” Lovvorn said.
Law enforcement agencies in Butler and surrounding counties were alerted to be on the lookout (BOLO) for Payne Saturday evening. Officers had been searching for Payne as a person of interest in the case. He was thought to be driving a white Chevrolet Malibu type vehicle and was located at approximately 8:30 p.m. in Greenville.
Individuals with information about the shooting should notify the Greenville Police Department at 334-382-7461 or 334-382-9911.
