Greenville hosts second Bobby Terrell Tennis Tournament

The Greenville Area Community Tennis Association (GACTA) hosted the 2nd annual Bobby Terrell Tennis Tournamenton Feb.25 at the City of Greenville Tennis Courts.

The competitors played matches from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m at the tournament organized by Jenni Hamilton and Kelli Smith.

“We had 50 participants and played 55 matches,” Hamilton said. “It was a full day of tennis. Bobby Terrell’s family was even out there.”

GACTA is a non-profit organization with the mission of keeping the sport of tennis alive and thriving in this community. 

“Bobby Terrell was a big supporter of the game of tennis,” Hamilton said. “He loved the sport and wanted it to continue in Greenville.”

The tournament drew players from not only Greenville, but Montgomery and Prattville as well.

Hamilton recorded all the stats for the games.

“The intermediate winners in the singles category were Lily Smith, and runner-up Faith Baker,” Smith said. “Winners in the doubles match were Dave and Jane Kennett of Montgomery and the runners-up were Emelyn Coglan and Elly Daniel.”

The advanced winners in the singles category were Olivier Dury and runner up Colton Campbell.

“They also won the Advanced Doubles match,” said Hamilton. Both of these players are from Prattville, Hamilton explained.

Runners-up in this category were Ward Thigpen and Claire Hutson.

“Claire had a great tournament with an outstanding showing in her semifinal singles match against Colton,” Hamilton said.
