Opinion: County information should be available to any citizen

It doesn’t look like I will be able to do a salary comparison for county officials this week either.

I received a letter from our County Attorney stating that because I failed to provide a reason for requesting the salaries my request was denied.

I got to that blank on the request form and put not applicable because there is no reason required to get information that belongs to us as citizens.

Why should we have to give a reason for requesting information that is ours to start with?

I am reading up on the Freedom of Information Act and on the Open Records law and so there will be more to follow on this.

It still baffles me that I can, over the phone in less than 10 minutes, get this same information no reason required from Montgomery and Butler Counties.

It appears that these two counties understand transparency better than Crenshaw County does.

I attended the Commissioners meeting on April 22, 2019, and was extremely disappointed to see that our commissioners are still unable to reschedule a meeting that falls on a holiday.

The vote was unanimous to cancel the night meeting in May due to it falling on Memorial Day versus rescheduling it to Tuesday 21 May 2019.

I was hoping that with addition of three new faces we could actually have 24 meetings a year; after all, we do pay for these meetings.

This is not to say the new Commissioners aren’t doing a good job.

They have been working on  getting roads reported and fixed and also helping citizens out with other things.

Also, they have been doing what they said with the money as far as returning a portion to the community.

If they could just reschedule a meeting.
