George Fail Alford Jr., 68, was born Dec. 7, 1949 and died March 21, 2018. He was a lifelong resident of Camden, Alabama.

He attended Wilcox County High School and graduated in 1968.

After high school, George enrolled in Auburn University and graduated with a degree in economics in 1972 and remained an Auburn man the rest of his life.

Upon graduation, George was employed with the Alabama-Tombigbee Regional Commission where he served as Executive Director for 20 of his 25 years.

During that time, Mr. Alford served as the President of the National Association of Development Organizations and also as President of the Alabama Association of Regional Councils. 

Upon his retirement, Mr. Alford accepted a position with Pioneer Electric Cooperative in industrial development and as Manager of the Innovation Centre. 

After his time with Pioneer Electric, he served as Manager and Industrial Developer for the Wilcox County Industrial Development Authority where he was instrumental in locating the Golden Dragon Copper USA Mill in Wilcox County.

Mr. Alford served on the board of J. Paul Jones Hospital for 40 years and served as chairman of the board for 30 years.

George was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist. 

He especially loved turkey hunting.

He was a member of Camden United Methodist Church where he taught the Friends in Faith Sunday school class for many years.

George is survived by his wife: Ann Albritton Alford, son: George Fail Alford, III (Tiffany), son: William Henderson Bruce Alford (Kim), son: Scott Albritton Alford (Jessica):  grandson: George Fail Alford, IV, grandson:  Henderson Hayes Alford; granddaughter: Elizabeth Lorraine Alford; granddaughter:  Lorraine Bruce Alford; grandson:  William Dobbs Alford; granddaughter:  Alice Scott Alford and a number of nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father: George Fail Alford, Sr.; mother:  Mary Scott Alford; sister:  Mary Scott Alford Barnes; and brother:  John Robison Alford.

Services were held at the Camden United Methodist Church on March 24, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.

Visitation began at 1:30 p.m., lasting until until 3:00 p.m. 

Pastor Brian Dovey officiated. 

Burial was at the Camden Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers were:  John Clyde Riggs, Frank Dobson, Dr. Sumpter Blackmon, Hal Huggins, Bob Wills, Henry Camp, Dr. Bo Phillipi and Dr. Bill Smith.

Honorary Pallbearers were:  Royce Inlow, Dr. Tom Huddleston, Andy Cromer, Billy Belk, Dr. John Reardon, Randy Kelley and Bob Weathers.
