The Greenville American Legion Post No. 24 sponsored seven Boys/Girls State delegates from Butler County.
Alabama Boys/Girls State is a leadership and government training program. It is among the highest honors granted to rising high school senior boys and girls.
Students from around the state are chosen based on their demonstration of leadership, hard work, strong morals and motivation in school and community activities.
Alabama Boys State will be the week of May 28 to June 3, 2017 at the University of Alabama. Girls State will be held the following week of June 4 to June 9, 2017 at the University.
During the two weeks the students will conduct mock state and local elections, learn about civic processes as well as participate in community service projects.
Delegates will also have the opportunity to join interest groups that focus on their individual areas of interest, including law, law enforcement, local government and the environment.
During a trip to the State Capitol in Montgomery, the students will conduct a mock session of the state legislature.
The American Legion believes there is no better way to assure the survival of our republic than to train our young people in the ideas and objectives of American Government.
By teaching youth to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the successful management of a democratic society we can keep America strong and ensure freedom for future generations. These are the distinguished, longstanding objectives of American Boys/Girls State.
