The Highland Home Flying Squadron baseball and softball teams ready for the 2017-2018 season as they spend numerous hours on the field each afternoon.
The Flying Squadron baseball team had a final record of 16-8 and was ranked No. 7 in class 2A by ASWA.
Last year the Flying Squadron went to the first round of class 2A playoffs, but came up short.
The HHS J.V. and varsity baseball teams will open up their season against Luverne High School on Monday.
Head varsity coach Jonathan Jordan says, “We get one percent better every day. All 12 players will be beneficial to the team. Everyone has a role on the team and every role is important.”
The Flying Squadron has 10 returning players and five of them are seniors.
The Lady Squadron ended last year with a 17-11 record, including tournaments.
Winning the 2A area tournament, Highland Home proceeded to go to regionals for the second year in a row.
The Lady Squadron head softball coach, Cassie Smith, comments on last season by saying, “We had a great season last year. Every year we keep improving. I expect the same for this year as well.”
The Highland Home softball team will start off their season by hosting the McKenzie Lady Tigers on Thursday, Feb. 23.
This year, Highland Home moved down to 1A and now they are competing against the Brantley Bulldogs and the Georgiana Panthers for area.
The Lady Squadron has seven returning starters and only one is a senior.
“We have a very young team, but still full of talent,” Smith said.
