The Luverne City Council accepted a bid from DMD Engineering for the playground project.

“We have started working on the playground,” said Troy Hudson of DMD Engineering. “We planning and specifications.”

Hudson had planned to start the project in July, after the baseball and softball season had ended. To ensure the city was in compliance with the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, he asked that the engineering job be opened for bids. Hudson’s engineering firm was the only firm to submit a bid in the month that it was open and city council voted to accept the bid during last Monday’s meeting.

As design engineer, Hudson will have to submit the plans to ADECA for approval before he can bid out for construction proposals.

“I have to submit to ADECA because they are providing the funds. I don’t know how long approval is going to take,” he said. “Everything hinges on ADECA’s approval.”

The estimated cost of the project is $110,000, which was secured through donations and a $55,000 matching grant from ADECA.

Once approved, Hudson will get a bid package for contractors and suppliers. The bidding period will last for at least three weeks.

Construction of the playground will start once the bidding period closes and contractors and suppliers are selected.
