LBW Community College in Andalusia is offering a free, three-day math camp designed to help students boost their math skills.

“When we conducted this camp in the past, many students were able to jump ahead to the next math level,” said Mary Ann Hudson, LBWCC mathematics and science division chair.

The math camp is for students who are already enrolled in Math 090 and 098 developmental math courses or have an IP, or “in progress,” in those courses.

“If you are in Math 100 and transferring to another college, please be aware that some colleges will not accept the math camp grade for this course. In this case, students must register and pay for Math 100. The camp can be used to progress through Math 100 for those who have an incomplete.”

In order to test and advance, students are required to attend both all sessions of the camp.

“They can save both time and money by improving their skills enough to pass the final exam and move ahead to the next level,” she said.

The faster students move through developmental courses, the sooner they can take advance courses such as chemistry, physics, and calculus, or move into or complete their technical program of study, she said.

“Current students in the basic courses will have the opportunity to take a final exam on Aug. 14, and if they pass, will be allowed to move on to the next course and save the tuition cost of their current course.”

The math camp is set for Aug. 12-13, 5-9 p.m., with the final exam at 8 a.m. on Aug. 14.

Attendees should meet in the Andalusia campus library beginning at 4:30-4:45 p.m. on Aug. 12.

Each student must bring a copy of their fall class schedule, which can be printed from myLBWCC at www.lbwcc.edu, and a photo ID.

Test results will be released on the first day of the scheduled math class.

Seats are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis, she said. To reserve a seat, email Hudson at mhudson@lbwcc.edu and include the math course needed.
