American Legion Post #24 has selected six Butler County students to take part in Boys State and Girls State.

Greenville High School’s Winston Sims, Fort Dale Academy’s Caison Elliott and McKenzie School’s Austin Weather will attend Alabama Boys State, which is scheduled for May 31 – June 6 at the University of Alabama.

Greenville High School’s Sellers Swann, Fort Dale Academy’s Hannah Miller and McKenzie School’s Kendall Burt will attend Alabama Girls State, which is scheduled for June 7 – June 12. This year, Girls State will also be held at the University of Alabama. In years past, it has been held at Troy University.

At Boys State and Girls State, participants learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of American citizens. The training is objective and centers on the structure of city, county and state governments.

Operated by the students elected to various offices, activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies and recreational programs.

The Greenville Auxiliary presented each student with a $50 check to cover travel cost, which was supplemented by a $100 contribution from the Greenville Kiwanis Club.
