LBW Community College will recognize Dr. Rex Butler of Andalusia as the 2015 Outstanding Alumnus during the college’s commencement ceremony in May.

“We are more than thrilled to recognize Dr. Butler for his many accomplishments and his commitment to LBW and the community,” said LBWCC President Dr. Herb Riedel.

Butler’s journey toward a medical degree began at LBW with an Associate in Science degree in 1973. While a student in the college’s earliest years, Butler was active on campus and served as president of the Student Government Association and freshman class, received a number of collegiate Civitan honors, was selected as Mr. LBW, was a Distinguished Honor Student, and selected for Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Upon completion of an associate degree at LBW, he transferred to the University of Alabama and received a bachelor’s degree in 1975 and a medical degree in 1979 from the University of Alabama’s School of Medicine in Birmingham.

He served both his internship and residency in Pensacola, Fla., before returning to his hometown of Andalusia and establishing the South Central Medical Center. In October 2012, an Alabama State Senate Resolution commended his 30th anniversary in internal medicine.

In addition to serving his community as a physician, he has also served as a director and president of the LBWCC Foundation, president of the Covington County Heart Association, member of the Medical Education and Foundation Board, and as vice-chairman of the Andalusia Hospital Board of Directors.

He is a member of the American Medical Association, Medical Association of Alabama, Covington County Medical Society, and Covington County Historical Society.

Butler will be recognized at the LBWCC graduation set for 7 p.m. on May 8 at the Kiwanis Community Center in Andalusia.
