Mary Mallette Layton

Mary Mallette Layton, 86, of Greenville, Ala., died, Aug. 27, 2012 at Lenoir Park Assisted Living in Lenoir, N.C.  She was born Oct. 7, 1925 to Antoinette Izettie (Campbell) and Elmer Lee Mallette, near Rose Hill, Ala. She was delivered at home by her mother’s brother, Dr. Daniel Campbell. Mrs. Layton graduated from Luverne (Ala.) High School in 1943 and then from Troy University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. She taught school in Kolb City and at Greenville Elementary for almost 20 years.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Greenville, Ala. and was an active member of the Dorcas Sunday School class. She was married to James Wilford (Willie) Layton on May 26, 1946, who preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, James Lee Layton, daughter-in-law, Rebecca B. Layton, two grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Peterson and her spouse, William Peterson of Jacksonville Fla., and James William Layton and his spouse, Kari Layton of Carrollton Ga. In addition, she has four great-grandchildren, Levi Layton, Leah Layton, Abigail Peterson, and Kate Peterson. She was preceded in death by her sister, Elna Ree Harrison of Greenville Ala., and has one surviving sibling, Hazel Horn of Greenville Ala. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 31, 2012 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home in Greenville with the Rev. Jerry Wilkerson of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery with Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home directing.
