Mattie Lou Smith

Mattie Lou Smith went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 16, 2012 after a recent illness at L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital. She was born on October 9, 1926 to the late Clarence and Priscilla Womack of Greenville, Ala. She was a lifelong, faithful member of Popular Spring AME Zion church. She sang in the choir and served in numerous ministries. Mattie loved to sing hymns and sought God in prayer for everything. She had a love for her family and friends; spending time with them brought her great joy. She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband Joe Neal Smith, her oldest son Joel Neal Smith, Jr. and six siblings—Fred Lee Womack, Minnie Clyde Ford, Milton Womack, Geraldine Dozier, James E. Womack and Johnny Ray Womack.

Cherishing her memory are three children—Edna S. Hale (Willie) of Greenville, Ala. and Tena S. Phifer (James) of Northport, Ala., Willie F. Smith (Henrietta), Marietta, Ga. and a daughter-in-law, Ruth J. Smith; seven grandchildren—Sonia S. Carter (Daron), Kamesha K. Hawthorne (Elijah), Tawrence D. Smith (Senait), Maress D. Smith (LaKeshia), Jakeah Phifer, Jameka Phifer and Michelle S. Smith; two step-granddaughters—Kelli N. Hardnett and Erin E. Hardnett; eight great-grandchildren—Beontre Carter, Sonyate’ Carter, Ka’Mya Lanier, DeUndra Smith, Ka’Dashiana Hawthorne, Keon Smith, Darnell Smith, and Merhawi Smith; two sisters—Fannie Mae Womack and Annie Lois Womack of Pensacola, Fla.; two brothers-in-law—Cleveland Dozier of Mobile, Ala. and Robert Minor (Dorothy) of Pensacola, Fla.; seven sisters-in-law—Ceola Womack of Montgomery, Ala., Ola Womack of Junction City, Kan., Lillie Womack of Columbus, Ga., Amanda Lucas of Montgomery, Ala., Jean (Joseph) Webb of Atlanta, Mary Minor and Ruth Minor of Mansfield, Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Public viewing will be at Hudson Funeral Home, 620 West Commerce St., Greenville, Ala. 36037 on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012 from 3:00 PM till 8:00 PM.  The Homegoing Celebration will be on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 at Deliverance Temple #4; 1337 Aztec Road, Greenville, Ala. 36037. Celebration will be at 12 p.m. with viewing at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Magnolia Memorial Cemetery, Greenville, Ala.
