The Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that a body found on Wednesday in north Crenshaw County is that of Cecil Mocks, an 87-year-old man who had been missing since October 26.

“Around 12 p.m., we got a phone call from a forestry crew that was burning some woods and preparing to plant trees, and they said they had found a body,” said CCSO investigator Ronnie White.

Mocks was usually seen riding his bicycle with a hard hat and neon work vest on, and White said that a vest was found with the body along with a billfold containing ID belonging to Mocks.

Mocks lived on Summerlin Lane, near Pouncey Road in the Sardis Community south of Highland Home, and White said his body was found in the woods not far from his home.

He was believed to have had the early stages of Alzheimer’s, and following his disappearance, a large manhunt was launched, including tracking dogs and a helicopter.

White said the body was turned over to forensics and the family was notified. He said foul play was not suspected.

“It’s a day with both sadness and the gladness that comes with the closure the family had been praying for,” White said.
