Resolving to make a difference

It’s that time of year again.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are gone and New Year’s is right around the corner, and that means New Year’s resolutions.

I’m not big on making New Year’s resolutions. Maybe it’s because I fear failure and vowing to do a certain thing, or not do a certain thing, for an entire year is a little daunting. If I slip up in Week 2 of January, I have to live with the failure for another 50 weeks.

So, I was going to resolve not to make a New Year’s resolution, but then I realized that in doing so I had made a resolution, and so, in a sense, I had already broken my New Year’s resolution — before Jan. 1 even got here I might add.

I think the problem is that my New Year’s resolutions have always been a little too me focused.

So, this year I’m making my New Year’s resolutions about others.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to try and fix you by telling you what you should and should not be doing.

No, instead I’m making my New Year’s resolution to be more giving.

I’m going to resolve to do at least one small act of kindness every month. Maybe that means making a monthly $10 donation to a nonprofit organization or leaving a big tip for my restaurant waiter or volunteering with a local organization to help others.

Basically, I want to resolve to make a difference in the lives of others — even if it’s a small difference. Want to join me?
