A Greenville native shot during an attempted robbery remains in the trauma center at UAB Hospital.

Digger Kimbro was one of three people shot when Ivan Batain, 25, of Birmingham, attempted to rob Wallace’s Lounge – an Ensley neighborhood bar in the 300 block of 19th Street in Birmingham.

Kimbro, a deliveryman for Birmingham Budweiser and a graduate of Fort Dale Academy, has undergone multiple surgeries following the shooting and is still listed in critical, but stable condition.

The bullet entered through Kimbro’s shoulder and “ricocheted downward through his body, going through his lung, liver and small intestine,” according to Kimbro’s girlfriend, Tiffany Burkett.

According Burkett, he is “becoming more alert.”

“They are being very conservative in weaning the vent,” Burkett said. “He has become more alert and tries really hard to communicate. I will talk to doctors today about the results from the last bronchoscopy.”

Batain has been charged with 10 counts of robbery and two counts of assault in connection with the incident, according to the Birmingham Police Department.

He is being held at the Birmingham City Jail on bonds totaling $645,000.
