Evelyn McGowin Surgener, 102, daughter of Willis and Ethyl McGowin of Chapman, Alabama passed away Monday October 10, 2011 at the Forum at Brookside in Louisville, Kentucky.
She attended Vassar College and graduated from the University of Southern California.
Evelyn was a retired publisher of the Kentucky Farmers Home Journal and a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, a member of Anchorage Garden Club, Louisville Women Club, former member of the Owl Creek Country Club and the Pendennis Club. She was also featured in Who’s Who of American Businesswomen.
She was preceded in death by her husbands William Vaughan Spencer, Samuel R. Guard, and Damon M. Surgener. She is survived by her loving son, William Vaughan Spencer, Jr(Roberta), stepsons, Samuel Rodrick Guard and Damon M. Surgener Jr., four grandchildren, Evelyn Spencer, William Spencer, Victoria Rouse, and Judith Price, two step grandchildren, Stacy Ogburn and William Faison and numerous great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 18 at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, 210 Church St, Greenville, Alabama, with burial at Magnolia Cemetery to follow. Dunklin and Daniels Funeral Home directing.
In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to The American Heart Association or the Alzheimer Foundation.
