Under the new law, those purchasing car tags must present the name, driver’s license number and driver’s license expiration date for everyone listed on the vehicles registration.

The impact of Alabama’s new immigration law, which took effect today, is already being felt by Butler County residents trying to purchase car tags.

Under the new law, those purchasing car tags must present the name, driver’s license number and driver’s license expiration date for everyone listed on the vehicles registration.

“If mom and dad are both on the registration, we have to have all the information for both of them before we can issue a tag,” Probate Judge Steve Norman said. “We’ve had some people come in today without all the information and we’ve had to send them back home or back to the car to get it. There’s just no way around it. We’ve got to have everything before we can issue a tag.”

With the new law taking effect, residents must prove citizenship before buying tags or renewing licenses. Probate Office employees are also required to see and make copies of proof of citizenship for anyone obtaining or renewing a license, whether it be a driver’s license, car tag, business license or marriage license.
