Alabama Chief Supreme Court Justice Sue Bell Cobb is stepping down.

Cobb announced her decision in a written statement Wednesday.

She wrote that she wants to spend more time with her family, but she also cites the judicial budget crunch as a key reason for her departure.

“This decision has been infinitely more difficult because of the inadequate funding budgeted by the Legislature for our judicial system,” she wrote. “I desperately wanted to depart leaving the system on better financial footing than when I came.”

Cobb will leave office August 1.
