50 years ago: Weatherman Hines Wolters of WSFA-TV, greeted by Civitan President Johnny Hartzog, was the featured speaker at the Steak House in Greenville . . . Brenda Russell and Mary Ann Worthington, members of the Greenville High Majorette Corps are seen holding up an umbrella to make sure the groundhog does not see his shadow so they can get in some majorette practice for the upcoming band festival . . . Roy Waller receives a check for $618 from Reigel Textiles as a result of a suggestion he made some time ago . . . Ellen Nix is tackling the big job of making  stove wood from this big pine at the Nix home on Old Manningham Road, on the northern edge of Greenville . . . the Bolling home, built well over 100 years ago by a Butler pioneer, William Hartley, is being torn down and material in the home is being sold. The Bolling home was occupied by five generations of that family . . . the Junior High “Citizen of the Month” is pretty Diane Adams, a 5’1” brown-eyed, blond-haired 7th grader who likes swimming, tennis and English. Her favorite color is blue . . .

25 years ago: Greenville Police Chief Lonzo Ingram, former police chief Kenneth Flowers, Greenville Police Captain Thomas Tutchtone and Max Joiner were among the 60 arrested residents during the March of Dimes Jail–and-Bail last week . . . a fire ravaged  the home of Gerald and Frances Benson on last Saturday evening . . . Miss Rhonda Bentley, 19-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Bentley, has been named a state finalist in the Miss Alabama  American Coed Pageant . . . Mrs. David Lowe brought a lovely amaryllis by The Advocate offices recently . . . Butler County Mental Health has a new home next to L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital . . . Carlton Whittle, president, presented Freddie Daughtry an award for five years of service to Structural Woods Systems, where Freddie serves as an engineer . . . Katie and Lee Branum, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Branum, and their cousin, Deidre McClure, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McClure, all share the same birthday . . . Greenville High School “B” Team members are Howard Works, Fred Mickles, Scott McNaughton, Michael Clayborn, Bruce Crenshaw, Robert Scott, Johnny Nix, Jason Adair, Richard Scott, Eric Perdue and Travis Goldsmith . . .

10 years ago: CVS Pharmacy celebrated its grand opening on Friday with Magoo Hamilton, Amy McCauley, David Brown, Carolyn Wasden, Frank Thigpen, Ellen Jones, Randy Butts, Mayor Dexter McLendon and Carol Lee present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony . . . the Butler County unit of the American Cancer Society was presented with an award by the AC S for placing in the top ten units in the country for its efforts in the Relay For Life fundraising project . . . Adam Crenshaw makes the last point of the game with this free throw, and the FDA Eagles defeated the Senators of Morgan Academy 44-42 . . . the Greenville Academy Tornados win in double-overtime against Catherine Academy. . .Jamie Parrish made the three-pointers that put the game into overtime. He is shown being carried off the court by Blakely Ward, Andy Beck, and Adam Garlock, as Michael Cauthen and Josh Burt look on . . . Kimberly and George Fridlander, Julliard-trained musicians, brought their Christian ministry to Greenville and First Baptist Church recently . . . jobless rates in the county are at lowest level since 1996 . . .
