Greenville High School will host its annual Football Banquet on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. at the high school cafeteria. Tickets are $6 per person. The special guest speaker will be Troy University assistant coach Shayne Wasden.
While coaching at Troy University, Wasden has had the opportunity to coach many great players. One player, Troy receiver Gary Banks, set the single-season receiving record before another player, receiver Jerrel Jernigan, broke that record last season. He has also had the opportunity to coach Troy’s all-time leading punter, Thomas Olmstead, Troy’s all-time leader in field goals, Greg Whibbs, and Troy’s all-time leader in punt returns, Leodis McKelvin.
Wasden joined the staff at Troy as receivers coach in May 2004, following a successful career as a high school head coach in Alabama. He served as the head coach at Georgiana, Opp and Eufaula High Schools.
In 11 seasons as a high school head coach, Wasden’s teams posted a record of 91 wins and 34 losses and advanced to the postseason 10 times. He lettered three years as a receiver at Auburn University.
He is the son of Butler County native Bobby Wasden, who played on Auburn’s 1957 National Championship team and also coached 35 years of high school football.
The younger Wasden is widely remembered by Auburn fans for catching a last-second touchdown pass from Reggie Slack against Florida in 1989 for a 10-7 victory.
