Shawn Gregory has been relieved of his duties as head coach/athletic director of the Georgiana Panthers, according to new school Athletic Director Kirk Norris.

No reason for Gregory’s dismissal as head coach was given by Norris, but Principal Joseph Dean said there really wasn’t one specific reason.

“Coach Gregory has been a tremendous influence on the students and we appreciate all his efforts, but at this time we feel it is in the best interest of our program to go in a different direction.”

Dean said Gregory will continue teaching at Georgiana.

Assistant Coach Michael Moore will assume duties as interim head coach, said Norris.

“I appreciate Mr. (Joseph) Dean trusting in me and putting his faith in me to do the job as athletic director,” said Norris.

Norris coaches the school’s boys basketball program.

The Panthers are 0-6 on the year and suffered a 72-6 loss to McKenzie on Friday night.

Gregory was in his first year as head football coach for the Panthers.
