The new Georgiana Civitan Club is on a roll as the date for their charter banquet rapidly approaches.

Another new member, Voncile Bedgood, was added to the roster at the August 12 organizational meeting, with nomination of charter officers also on the agenda.

“Georgiana rocks! We are right at our goal of 30 charter members,” said Tami Awe, president-elect of the Enterprise Civitan Club, the sponsor organization for the Georgiana club.

“Now we are encouraging our members to work on achieving our ‘stretch goal’ of 40 or more members by our charter banquet on August 26.”

Current district governor Jim Smith was on hand to congratulate the club on the outstanding results of their very first project, a school supply drive, with nine large boxes of student, teacher and nurse supplies and $386 in cash donated to assist Georgiana School.

The following charter officers were nominated on Thursday: president, Byron Ward; president-elect, Wendall Andrews; secretary, Verlinda Dixon; treasurer, Ernie Scruggs; chaplain, Douglas Golden; sergeant-at-arms, Alan Ward, media, webmaster and PR, Larson Watts and directors, Larry Creech, Debby Mayberry, Larson Watts and Jessica Ward.

Nominations from the floor will be accepted at the August 19 meeting, with officers to be installed at the charter banquet set for August 26. The banquet will be catered by J & D Restaurant; the cost will be $10 per person payable the night of the event. Business attire is requested.

“Officer and board positions will be elected at our August 19 meeting, so we want all members to attend on Thursday and let their voices be heard,” Awe said. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. with refreshments and runs until 7 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church fellowship hall on Highway 106, Georgiana. Following the charter, the club will hold dinner meetings every 2nd and 4th Thursdays at Calvary Baptist Church.

Civitans strive to help their own and surrounding communities and have fun doing it, says Awe.

“If you want to be a part of this active group and make a difference in your community, please consider joining us this Thursday night and bring a friend,” she said.
